Katekyo Hitman Reborn! 306

[scanlation by I Eat Manga]

Character popularity poll results are unsurprising when you consider the overwhelmingly female audience. That said, shame on you, voters! Lambo down in 18th?! I implore you to think back to when the series was fun.

This isn’t only Hajime no Ippo and Saint Seiya, but now also Fist of the North Star? Shameless.

You are already boring

More straightforward attacks from Aoba and his new magical eye. Fortunately, Ryohei actually seems to have a plan to counter this attacking strategy, rather than just another uninteresting twist to one-up Aoba.

It seems Aoba’s limiter-sunglasses were restricting use of his extreme vision for his own sake. Again, it’s good to see Ryohei’s awareness being used to capitalize on that.

Final Flash: Speed lines and punching. Would anyone mind if I demoted this to Series Roundup? Individual writeups for this series now seem like a waste.

Katekyo Hitman Reborn! 305

September 11, 2010 2 comments
[scanlation by I Eat Manga]

In case you forgot, this chapter is here to remind you that speed lines indicate rapid movement.

I don’t care if it’s just being used as a generic boxing-related term: Amano shouldn’t be throwing out the word “counter” if it has no application to the move being used or the scene at hand.

Destroyed by poor terminology

Ryohei’s new ability certifies him as the party’s official tank. What an unimaginative upgrade.

... and the more derivative you become.

I hate to repeat myself week after week, but Amano’s art becomes more confusing by the panel. More detail does not equal more quality. Certainly, a minimum level of detail is mandatory, but too much ink is just as bad as too little. Amano used to have balanced art, but she’s clearly lost sight of her strengths.

Pages of uninteresting fighting, and a Bleach-style twist at the end. Trying to squeeze life out of a fight between a practically meaningless opponent and one of the least engaging protagonists is more than enough to repulse readers.

Final Flash: There is no magic in this series left to lose.

Katekyo Hitman Reborn! 304

September 3, 2010 Leave a comment
[scanlation by Binktopia]

I’m reading a series with an armored kangaroo. Sometimes, this whole manga-reading business is embarrassing.

Ryohei donning Kangaryuu’s armor pieces makes him look a bit like a Saint Seiya character. I wonder if that’s at all an intentional homage.

Saint Seiya doesn't have kangaroos, though

The future arc was ridiculous enough, but the way its existence has been handled since is even more preposterous. How are more and more characters aware of what happened (happens?) in the future?

I have absolutely no idea what Aoba’s powerup is. Once again, Amano has tried to add too much detail, and has instead made her art completely illegible.

Jumbled and confused

Obviously, Ryohei has to wait a certain amount of time and/or take a certain amount of damage before revealing his full power. That works in video games, but it alone doesn’t generate interesting fights in manga.

Final Flash: In stark contrast to Naruto, the speed lines and detail of Reborn! just muddle and ruin the art.

Shonen Shikku Canceled; Enigma to Debut

September 2, 2010 Leave a comment

Issue #40 of Weekly Shonen Jump marks the 15th and final chapter of Shonen Shikku, the first major work by newcomer Tsukuda Yuuto. Since becoming eligible for fan ranking, Shonen Shikku has never managed to escape the bottom 5 of the table of contents, even placing dead last five times. Its early cancellation is yet another in a string of poor performances from new Shonen Jump series, as has been evidenced by the similarly early ends to Lock On! and Kiben Gakuha, Yotsuya-senpai no Kaidan, and as it seems will further be proven with another cancellation expected next week.

The space left by Shonen Shikku will be filled starting next week by Enigma, a new series by Sakaki Kenji, a former assistant to Amano Akira (Katekyo Hitman Reborn!). An early preview picture is available:

Katekyo Hitman Reborn! 303

[scanlation by I Eat Manga]

Even if Tsuna’s new Hot Topic-inspired, jewelry-laden gloves look tacky as hell, that’s still a pretty nice color cover page.

They’re fighting for pride. That’s as high as they’re aiming here. Pride. Let’s get this over with, then.

I have lost any respect I had left for Amano Akira thanks to Adelheid’s chest. How completely ridiculous.

I miss when Lambo was an important character. When he was one of the main focuses of the series, the series was so much more fun.

Horribly underutilized

Ryohei’s opponent can manipulate plants, and yet they’re going to have a boxing match. I mean, if you’re going to take the time to come up with new abilities for your characters, you might as well have the characters use them.

Final Flash: Dull, uninspired, aimless… and this is just the beginning of the fights in this arc. Oh boy.

Katekyo Hitman Reborn! 302

[scanlation by Binktopia]

Enjoy an active lifestyle. Sail.

As if the constant comparisons being drawn between Tsuna and Vongola Primo weren’t already enough, evidently they look exactly the same. This is beyond ridiculous. For a protagonist to have one or two similarities to a canonically strong historical figure is fine; for every single aspect of the protagonist and his group to be identical to said figure is horrible writing.

Has Amano mentioned Vongola Primo yet?

The Ninth’s subordinates don’t want Tsuna and his group to fight against Shimon alone, because Shimon demolished them mere chapters ago, but the Ninth holds firm because he “knew it in his heart.” I’m sorry, I must be confusing this with a series about the mafia.

The next time I want to hide something, I’m covering it in papier-mâché pictures of the surroundings. What a brilliant plan.

Are you kidding me with Adelheid’s breasts here? That’s Eiken-level insulting. Pathetic.

I’m pretty certain that Vongola and Shimon were going to fight already. I fail to see the necessity of Vindice showing up to spur them on to fight.

Final Flash: The boredom is compounded by the week. I miss old Reborn!.

Katekyo Hitman Reborn! 301

[scanlation by I Eat Manga]

These new and improved Vongola rings are now all sorts of accessories emblazoned with each character’s box animal. Tsuna’s ring even has a fashionable chain.

Hot Topic would be proud

I have officially lost all interest in Vongola history and backstory. It’s been an endless string of minor variations on the same warring mafia theme since the tone of the series became serious.

Tsuna just isn’t the kind of character to be able to sincerely pull off the willpower-fueled hero archetype. It may become tiresome and downright irritating in Fairy Tail for Natsu to constantly win battles through sheer willpower alone, but his character suits the plot device; Tsuna should still be the nervous kid dragged against his will into a world much bigger than him. Instead, he wants to fight alone.

Reborn (the character) being ordered to go with Tsuna’s group, yet specifically ordered not to attack, indicates that he may finally have some horribly overdue plot development. Maybe he’s Vongola Primo.

You damn well better bring Lambo with you. He’s the only reason to read the series anymore, and even then his role has been marginalized.

Speaking of marginalized characters, there’s Kyoko, who is downright useless. Her occasional appearances serve no purpose. Tsuna isn’t the same awkward kid anymore, so why should we be forcibly reminded of his one-sided love? At least complete Tsuna’s transformation into this ridiculous battle-hardened veteran, and make him disinterested in Kyoko.

Shouichi and Spanner are still around, providing Tsuna with more overcomplicated weaponry. If Amano put half the effort into writing the narrative that she does into creating silly, easily marketable technical designs, the plot might go somewhere interesting.

Final Flash: Completely dull and unremarkable chapter. Last chapter was too brief; this one was too long. Last week’s ring power-up should have extended into this chapter, while all the “saying goodbye” nonsense from this chapter should have been dropped entirely.

Katekyo Hitman Reborn! 300

[scanlation by I Eat Manga]

300 chapters of Reborn!, which seems to be about 100 chapters too long.

Bored, if I'm honest

“I can’t believe this rival mafia family with exactly the same number of members as our group, all of which had skills and personalities that perfectly matched up with our own, turned out to be the antagonists.” Right.

More nonsense involving the “souls” of the rings. Nothing to see here.

There’s a chance Nuts could die! … I apologize, that’s supposed to be a bad thing. I misplaced my somber tone.

The ring upgrade took one chapter. It’s not like I wanted to read a long training arc, but one chapter? That’s so short it feels completely meaningless. If the Vongola family is now able to stand up to Shimon after such a brief upgrade, it’ll further cheapen the entire arc.

Final Flash: What an uneventful way to celebrate a publishing milestone.
